The Book Circle is an author talk event meeting on the third Thursday of the month at 2pm (except in July and August). Our speakers are mostly published authors and we have a mix of genres. Occasionally we have academic speakers on literary topics.
Autumn Programme
17th Sept – Claire Fuller ‘Writing across genres: how I do it and what it means’
Award winning novelist Claire returns to see us once again. She last spoke about her novel ‘Unsettled Ground’ which was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2021.
Claire has crossed genres in her latest novel, ‘Hunger and Thirst’ bringing in literary tones of a crime and horror story.
15th Oct – Liz Freemantle ‘An interview with…’
An award-winning and bestselling novelist and teacher of creative writing, Elizabeth is the author of several historical novels.
Liz returns once again to be interviewed about her latest novel ‘Sinners’ which is a fiery historical tale of rebellion and survival in Renaissance Rome – a bold feminist retelling which focuses on a notorious murder trial and the young woman at its heart, Beatrice Cenci.
19th Nov – Anne Sebba ‘The Women’s orchestra of Auschwitz’
Anne is one of Britain’s most distinguished biographers. Formerly a Reuters correspondent she has written ten works of non-fiction mostly about iconic women and presented BBC radio documentaries.
On this visit, Anne will give a vivid portrait of the young women with little musical knowledge who came together to survive the horrors of Auschwitz.
17th Dec – Matson Taylor ‘A well-curated journey: from museum historian to novelist’
Matson Taylor worked at the V&A Museum as a design historian for 15 years. The museum helped inspire his first book and how a knowledge of design history proved to be very helpful to an aspiring novelist.
He will also talk about his time as assistant curator at the Keats-Shelley Memorial House in Rome and share memories of the city he lived in for 5 years – and the city in which his latest novel, Roman Mornings, is set.
The Book Circle should appeal to anyone with a love of reading and literature.
The annual fee at present is £30 or £5 for one-off attendance.
The Book Circle is run by volunteers.
